World
War One Project
This joint project was created by post-primary pupils aged
between 16 and 17 years from Wellington College, Belfast and
Presentation Secondary School, Tralee. It is an example of one
group’s collaboration using Wikis in Moodle. Three other
similar wikis were produced by other groups on the topic of the first
world war.
Wiki pages were contributed by both schools. Good photos were
displayed in the World War One wikis, including some of the pupils
themselves visiting the trenches while on their face to face visit to
Belgium.
This school partnership also produced interesting work on stereotypes,
particularly on Northern Irish and Irish stereotypes. A
questionnaire was shared between schools. The
‘history’ of the wikis revealed debate between north and
south, with pupils changing wiki pages and giving opinions on what
others thought of them.
The teacher from the Northern Ireland school commented in an interview on how successful the contentious debate had been:
‘I
wouldn’t say our school is sectarian but there are elements
of
sectarianism, there are two girls in the group who would be very rigid
in their
views and… one has changed completely and when they went
away they met other
people and got on famously, they were emailing each other, phoning each
other
so I think that has been almost a revelation for her’.
