The Irish Famine 1845

Age: 10,11
Project Year: 2010-11

This current year our pupils are jointly involved in studying the Irish Famine

Pupils begin their partnership by exchanging pupil profiles. The pupils from both our schools used the Wikis to exchange information about themselves. This current year our pupils are jointly involved in studying the Irish Famine. They are also exchanging messages via the forums and jointly contribute information to the Wikis. We have tried a couple of video conferencing sessions. On the first occasion the southern school had no sound but nevertheless both schools saw each other and were able to communicate one orally andGiving the Presentation the other by using writing on the white board. The second attempt was not as successful.

For Dissolving Boundaries Day the children in the South did a presentation of the work they had done during the year to the remainder of the pupils and all the other teachers. They explained in great detail what was involved in the Dissolving Boundaries project. We also held a video conferencing session with our partner school and carried out a quiz with them based on the novel which we studied in both schools.

We have gone on two trips together. Our first one was to the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. Pupils enjoyed it but tended to not 'mix' as much as the teachers had hoped. Then on our second trip we went to Tanagh Outdoor Pursuits Centre. It was much more successful and pupils were immediately split up and put into groups. The end result was new friendships and a much more memorable experience for all.
