The Great Famine

Age: 8,9,10,11
Project Year: 2010-11

The main causes of the famine and the devastating effect it had on the Irish people

The children were really excited about their initial introductions via the forums. Pupils are looking forward to more on line collaboration via video conferencing and wikis. The interesting exchanges between the students on the book that both schools are reading based in Famine times 'Under The Hawthorn Tree'. The children also did a study of emigration and read Wildflower Girl in relation to emigration.

Face-to-Face

By choosing a face-to-face meeting that is connected to our project we hope that this will further consolidate the current class based work. We also hope that by meeting face to face this will further strengthen the children's relationships and understanding of their collaborative project. We visited the Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship in Dublin on Friday, 11th March which was both very informative and enjoyable. The children had learned a lot about the famine and demonstrated their knowledge with some very intelligent responses to questions and comments on what the tour guide spoke about. They obviously learned quite a bit about the famine and the experience of seeing what a famine ship looked like greatly enhanced their learning. We got a few group photographs on board the ship before returning to the buses.

We then went to the Phoenix Park Restaurant in the Heritage Centre to have something to eat. The children sat in their groups and got on really well with each other. We got lots of photos in the restaurant too. Unfortunately it was a very wet day so they didn't get a chance to go out to the park to play football much to the disappointment of the boys particularly. We all had a lovely day but with the long drive back home the long awaited trip and meeting ended all too quickly.

Media Gallery

For Dissolving Boundaries Day 2014 we invited schools to send us short video recordings that show what DB means to them. We've pieced these together into a movie!

A documentary about linking schools through ICT; case studies of cross-border links between Northern Ireland and Ireland in the Dissolving Boundaries programme and in Israel through the TEC program.
