Knowing our World

Age: 8,9,10
Project Year: 2010-11

A project for the children to investigate the continents and countries around the world.

We decided to choose a project for the children to investigate the continents and countries around the world. Their locations, languages, cultures, foods and famous attractions. The children were divided into six Wiki groups. Each group was assigned a colour. Three children from Scoil Bhríde, Glen and five from St Mary's PS in each group. Groups made up jigsaws with two pieces from each child having a photo and factfile on themselves. All the pieces fitted together and the children in the same group in each twin school had to assemble the jigsaws! We then had video conference. We sent Halloween cards and Autumn poems via post. The face to face meeting was after November. This provided a lot of momentum for the kids to talk on the forums. Both schools wrote stories about the activities and sent them by post. Christmas cards were sent from both schools. In January 2011 we had another video conference. Groups each assigned a continent and children have begun picking a country to research. They will be presenting this info via the Wiki pages and the forums.

Face-to-Face

We met up in Tanagh Outdoor Education Centre on November 4th 2010. The children were divided into their Wiki groups. A few ice breaker activities were done to get the kids working together. After this three Wiki groups went off canoeing and using the 'slippery slope' for the morning while the other three Wiki groups did Rock Climbing and orienteering. After lunch in the dining hall the groups switched activities. Final goodbyes were said before both schools headed for home. The children really enjoyed the day out and are still talking about it. They talked all about face to face meeting on the Wiki Forums.

For Dissolving Boundaries Day 2014 we invited schools to send us short video recordings that show what DB means to them. We've pieced these together into a movie!

A documentary about linking schools through ICT; case studies of cross-border links between Northern Ireland and Ireland in the Dissolving Boundaries programme and in Israel through the TEC program.
