A Year of Change

Age: 9,10,11
Project Year: 2012-13

Creating a calendar including seasonal art work and poetry

The project (recognisably ambitious) aimed at working collaboratively, to create a calendar including seasonal art work and poetry from pupils of both schools. This calendar was then to be printed commercially and sold as a fundraising activity and opportunity for pupils to use mathematics in a real life context. In the North of Ireland, the project was run as an after schools club for the Year 6 pupils initially. This gave pupils the opportunities to create Wiki profiles and become familiar with the forums (which were a big hit!) ahead of the year's challenge. We also used this time to create persuasive letters, which we sent out to businesses requesting sponsorship. We really appreciated being sponsored by Quinn's Coaches. Following this, calendars were created based on research into significant events which take place each month. These were sold during the school's Christmas Production, which was held in the Burnavon Theatre. Having raised just over £300.00, pupils were able to spend some of these on a cheeky ice cream following our incredible face-to face meeting with our partner school.

Face-to-Face

Venue: Parkanaur Forest, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone
The face-to-face meeting was held in Parkanaur Forest Park in Co Tyrone. Whilst this is not central to the two schools, it is the base for the work of the Speedwell project, and an excellent site for teambuilding opportunities. Taking place in early April, pupils enjoyed the opportunity to participate in orienteering challenges, water relays, river crossings and a trust walk. Working in teams made up of pupils from both schools meant that we soon established firm friendships. A great day was had by all, and we only wish we had held this event earlier in the year! Whilst we were unable to successfully link up as a result of bandwidth issues, the schools enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a videoconferencing session with Marita Conlon McKenna. It was exciting for us all to see how videoconferencing can enable shared education opportunities, as well as providing us with further mutual connections.

Media Gallery

For Dissolving Boundaries Day 2014 we invited schools to send us short video recordings that show what DB means to them. We've pieced these together into a movie!

A documentary about linking schools through ICT; case studies of cross-border links between Northern Ireland and Ireland in the Dissolving Boundaries programme and in Israel through the TEC program.
