The water cycle

Aim: to study the topic of Water and look at the water cycle focusing on the different sections; precipitation, condensation, evaporation and collection. Pupils preformed experiments on each section and on solubility in water. The two schools worked together both carrying out the experiments and then took turns in writing up the procedural part of the experiment. Both schools collaborated on background theory and results. Each school researched and wrote about the different water sources in their local area as well as creating a model for transferring water from one place to another. Each school tested out their model, explained how it worked and demonstrated to the other school via videoconferencing.

Face-to-face meeting

Venue: In each other’s schools
We had two face-to-face meetings, in each other's school, hosted by the teacher and children. We thought it would build better bonds and understanding if we met twice with the other school and if they could see our school in reality as one school was very rural and the other was very urban. The pupils got a tour of each school and took part in a variety of activities from soccer, zumba and art to samba band, cricket and a quiz. The pupils mixed freely at playtime and lunchtime but for activities they worked in their allocated groups to ensure all pupils mixed. However mingling between both schools never posed a problem.

Videoconferencing

We held a videoconference with the other school three/four times. We introduced ourselves in the first meeting and asked each group a few questions. The second VC was a short chat between the teachers to arrange some details for our meeting. Thirdly we had a conference to discuss our experiments and to exhibit our water model and explain how it worked to the other school. We had a fourth VC to celebrate Dissolving Boundaries Day and take part in a RTE News Today broadcast along with Balbriggan.

Media Gallery

For Dissolving Boundaries Day 2014 we invited schools to send us short video recordings that show what DB means to them. We've pieced these together into a movie!

A documentary about linking schools through ICT; case studies of cross-border links between Northern Ireland and Ireland in the Dissolving Boundaries programme and in Israel through the TEC program.
